RX10 V - close???

May 16, 2018

1

I've been on DSLRs for years but would like to purchase RX10.

Just looked at release dates for each II, III and IV.

06/15, 03/16 and 09/17 respectively.  If Sony follows up with this we can expect RX10 V soon.

Any news in this regard?

II to III was new lens...?

so III to IV better measure IMO;

& therefore a guess of 3/2019

But, given that we'd normally expect  the RX100 VI to be released before the next RX10 and there's no sign of that happening, I wouldn't put money on that date. Also, what substantial improvements could they make to justify a new camera, especially when there isn't much competition?

I could see an Rx10 II.5 before an RX10 V. The II would be well served with a sensor and AF makeover to much the RX10 IV.

With the sales of compacts still in decline, I also expect manufacturers will continue to lengthen release cycles. I'm guessing 18-24 months will become the normal update period. It's quickly closing in on 20 months since the RX100m5 was announced. The release of the RX100m6 will help define Sony's current refresh cycle.

Anybody currently considering the RX10m4 shouldn't even worry about its successor.

Oh, I agree. I'd buy one without a thought (of what my wife would say ) but I don't think it would be the Sony 'way' to go back to an older model.

But they know that the current model will stop working as soon as its replacement is announced.

II & III are essentially the same camera (in terms of tech) but different cameras in terms of body design & lens, so nothing you can look at for an upgrade pattern (if anything, look at the fact that since 03/16 Sony hasn't bothered to update the 24-200 model to include PDAF).

That leaves you with an 18 month gap between the III and IV and that didn't add a whole lot (PDAF is significant, but there weren't many changes)

If Sony follows up with this we can expect RX10 V soon.

18 months from the IV puts it almost a year out ... and what would you be looking for in an upgrade ?

No. An RX10V shouldn't be expected until fall 2019 or later. The 3 was released 9 months after the 2 because it was a major upgrade with a much longer lens. As such it did not replace the 2 but instead was a more expensive model to be offered along with the 1 and 2. The biggest complaint with the 3 was lack of PDAF AF so this major improvement was offered at another increased price point 18 months later and still did not replace the 1, 2 and 3. Sony now offers 4 versions of the RX10 so I expect the next iteration will be a replacement for the 1 with an improved 24-200 f2.8 lens and the RX10iv sensor, feature set and auto focus priced between the 2 and 3. As such it may be at least 2 years before a direct RX10iv replacement is announced.

It would be a new model, the RX10iv body but with an improved version of the 24-200 f2.8 lens. It's a logical addition. The 10i could be discontinued at that time.

But what would they call it ?

RX10 II Mark II ?

RX10 V would be bizarre.  But then, going from II to the III with such a different camera (or the RX100 II to III) was bizarre in the first place.  In the RX100 case, my bet is they have no intention of ever going back to the 28-100 equivalent lens.  Maybe that's the case with the RX10, too ...

I look at it as doing what they need to do to (a) stay attractive to potential new buyers and (b) getting existing owners to upgrade.

It's hard to imagine what would get RX10 IV owners to upgrade.  And new buyers have to view the RX10 IV as the pinnacle of the 1" models on the market right now.  The great thing for Sony is that they supply the sensors to the competition, so they know they're not about to be leapfrogged any time soon (at least in terms of what you can do with the sensor).  So unless Panasonic or Canon have something up their respective sleeves that will make the RX10 IV look less competitive any time soon, the release cycle can be long, as you say.

Anybody currently considering the RX10m4 shouldn't even worry about its successor.

Agreed.  Besides, who wants to spend $2000 on a fixed lens camera ?

I don't see many people asking for a return to the 28-100 f1.8-4.9 lens but a lot of people want the 28-200 f2.8 lens with built in ND filters and PDAF on an improved body. Because there is a demand I suspect such a camera is likely.

Panasonic doesn't make sensors, Canon doesn't make 1" sensors always seems to be behind in sensor design.

The trick is in the naming convention used. In my mind at least, the II was an update of the I and the IV was an update of the III, while the III and IV represent a different line than the I and II. Like the 24-105/4 is not an update of the 24-70/2.8. Sony may feel that the AF in the II is good enough, but as much as I'd like the smaller body for travel, having used the IV, it would be hard to go back to tho old contrast detect only AF system in the II, not to mention all the other goodies that we got in the IV. The lens in the I and II is fine with me. Just the sensor and features need updating. The question is, what do you call it? Certainly not RX10 V.

The reason I think Sony will release an RX 10 version with the RX10iv electronics combined with the 28-200 f2.8 lens is because it would sell well and there would be no extra R&D costs involved. It's what they did with the A99ii when they combined A7Rii electronics and sensor with an upgraded A77ii body and PDAF sensor.

We're both wrong. It's a 24-200mm lens f2.8 lens.
